peeing contest between animals of various shapes and sizes

Ever imagined a peeing contest between animals of various shapes and sizes? Probably not, but scientists studying the matter say that mammals big and small empty their bladders at about the same speed,  New Scientist  reports. More specifically, experts at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta have clocked the pee-time of rats, dogs, elephants, goats, and cows, and come up with a "law of urination"—that each animal takes about 21 seconds to go to the bathroom. The big news: Elephants empty their bladders at the same speed as smaller mammals, because gravity pulls urine quickly through their large urethras. Smaller animals, on the other hand, have shorter urethras that get less gravitational pull, but smaller bladders to empty out. Still, the urinary law has its limits: Really small creatures like bats and rats can pee in less than a second. The study's lead author hopes the finding will help diagnose urinary problems in large animals and possibly inspire designs

Woman Tears Son’s Scrotum; Tries to Repair With Superglue

A mother in San Antonio, Texas, is accused of  ripping her 6-year-old son's scrotum  and bruising his penis. Instead of seeking medical attention, she allegedly tried to mend his torn genitals with the adhesive power of superglue. The FBI charged  Jennifer Marie Vargas  on Wednesday with assault causing serious bodily injury after investigators said she grabbed the boy by his private parts and pulled with enough force to open a 4-centimeter laceration on his scrotum. KENS reports that Vargas mutilated her son on Sept. 27 and then  cleaned the wound with alcohol before trying to seal the gaping hole with the glue . “She  applied superglue to the (boy's) scrotum until the bleeding stopped , stuffed his underwear with paper towels, and then told him to go to bed,” a criminal complaint affidavit said. “Vargas did not seek any type of medical treatment for the child.” The assault occurred in the family's home at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Vargas' husband, who i

Man Helps Rescue Family From House Fire, Goes Back To Save Beer

Budweiser phased out its " Real Men of Genius "  commercials  in 2008, but this man may be enough to bring them out of retirement. In that vein, today we salute you, Mr. " Run Into a Burning Building to Save a Beer " man. While others are fearing for their safety and wondering what to do, you courageously dive back into the inferno, jeopardizing your own safety, and possibly the safety of firefighters, for just one more round. That real-life man of genius is Walter Serpit, a Columbus, Ga., resident who was watching television at his house Thursday afternoon, when a  new water heater is believed to have started a fire . As the room filled with smoke, Serpit, five other adults and two children escaped to safety, reports ABC2 News. Once clear of the structure, though, Serpit had other things on his mind. It wasn't the possible loss of family photos, beloved pets or family heirlooms. No, Serpit ventured back into the burning building to rescue some beers. "I to

A Terrifying Tour of the World's Most Dangerous Road

A Terrifying Tour of the World's Most Dangerous Road Some rights reserved by Jonas Witt To one side is solid rock. To the other, a 2,000-foot abyss. In between is a two-way, 12-foot-wide path known as "Death Road." Regularly named as the world's most dangerous route, North Yungas Road was cut into the side of the Cordillera Oriental Mountain chain in the 1930s. Many sections are unpaved and lack guardrails. Warm and humid winds from the Amazon bring heavy rains and fog. There are numerous mudslides and tumbling rocks, and small waterfalls occasionally rain down the cliff sides. These conditions explain why an estimated 200 to 300 people are killed on the road every year. Special rules apply at North Yungas Road. While the rest of Bolivia drives on the right side, here vehicles drive on the left. A driver on the left has a better view of the edge of the road. Furthermore, descending vehicles never have the right of way and must move to the outer edge of the road. This

Gunfight breaks out between Afghan and foreign soldiers

A gunfight broke out between Afghan and foreign soldiers on the outskirts of the capital Kabul on Saturday, leaving at least one Afghan serviceman dead and a number of other soldiers injured on Saturday, according to Afghan and NATO officials. So-called "insider attacks" are severely straining ties between the NATO-led alliance and the Kabul authorities and further undermine waning support for the war in the West. They have become one of the Taliban insurgents' most effective weapons against the coalition. "There was an argument between an Afghan and foreign soldier inside a military base... where they opened fire on each other. An investigation is ongoing," defense ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said. The soldier killed was Afghan, a spokesman for the NATO-led force said. A number of others were reported to have been injured. source: t hehimalayantimes.com

For those "who observe seemingly unconventional phenomena, which cause surprise or concern, know that there is an institution that will study and research your information," said Peru air force Col. Julio Jose Vucetich Abanto, who is in charge of the Directorate of Aerospace Interests. The OIFAA was originally set up in 2001, but closed after seven years because of administrative issues. Women Withhold Sex in “Crossed Leg” Protest

The  women of Barbacoas, Colombia have launched a sex strike  in their town in an effort to get the inadequate — and dangerous — road that links the town to the main province paved. For over a month now, the women have withheld all sexual activity in a protest that has been coined the “crossed leg movement.” While it may seem that road construction might not be of immediate concern to some, it turns out that the unpaved road has become a dangerous hazard for the community for a variety of reasons. For one, the town is in a volatile area of the country that is affected by ongoing guerrilla and paramilitary attacks. Without a safe and direct route out of the town, the entire community suffers. In addition, because of the unpaved road the cost of food is five or six times that of other areas of the country. The unpaved road has also led to many deaths. Often times in emergencies, ambulances get stuck in the mud and are unable to reach people in time. Judge Marybell Silva, a spokesperson f

Branded witch, 4 Rupandehi women stripped, abused

Accusing four women of practicing witchcraft , villagers in Shiktahan VDC-8 in Rupandehi have decided to severe all contacts with the families in question. A ‘village assembly’ on Thursday morning branded Yam Kumari Tharu, Phulmati Ahir, Dhan Kumari Tharu and Parbati Tharu as witches. Triloki Tharu, one of the victims, said they were made to sign a paper pertaining to the decision handed down by the assembly. The entire village stood against the four families after they informed the police that they were harassed in public on October 13. It all started on the eve of Bijaya Dashami. Villagers were celebrating at the village square, where an idol of goddess Durga had been installed. Two women, Renu Tharu and Nirmala Tharu, claimed that they were communing with the goddess and called out the names of the four women and accused them of practicing witchcraft . The four women were then dragged out of their homes to the village square, stripped, made to lick villagers’ spit and forced to conf

Govt: 10-day Maoist banda a major threat

In its latest security assessment, the government has identified the 10-day nationwide general strike called by the CPN-Maoist as the major security challenge in the run-up to the November 19 polls. The strike supported by the 33-party poll-opposing alliance led by the CPN-Maoist is scheduled to start on November 11. The government has taken the scheduled shutdown seriously and is taking measures to foil the strike and ensure normalcy during the period. “We have been receiving reports from across the districts that the CPN-Maoist is conducting various kinds of training and orientation of its cadres to disrupt the election,” said a senior security official closely following the day-to-day security situation. In recent weeks, the general strikes called by the CPN-Maoist has had little effect on the daily lives. Still, security officials maintain that in the final days before the polls the shutdown could emerge as a major “spoiler”. They have called for a coordinated approach to ensure no
