Sankhamul fire guts property worth two million rupees

Property worth two million rupees was gutted after a house caught fire at Shankhamul in the capital at 1 am Sunday morning.   The house taken in lease by Lal Bahadur Bhujel was caught by fire , said victim Bhujel.  Bhujel had been running a furniture shop while another shopkeeper had his quilt store at the same house. With the inferno, all the goods stored in the house turned into ashes in no time. The reason behind the fire is yet to be reported. The fire was taken under control by six fire engines one hour back. Bhandari shines for Nepal in Sri Lanka

Binod Bhandari scored a quick-fire half-century for Nepal to seal a thrilling two-wicket victory over Moors Sports Club on Friday in the second practice match of the national cricket team in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Nepal bowled out the Sri Lankan top-tier club for 147 runs in 36.2 overs and met the target in 32.2 overs losing eight wickets.  Chasing the small total, Nepal lost wickets at regular intervals. The opening partnership between Anil Mandal and Mahesh Chhetri ended at 11 runs when Mandal was dismissed for six runs. Chhetri also departed soon, adding only seven runs off 26 balls. FIFA World Cup trophy arrives in Nepal today

The most coveted trophy in world football -- the FIFA World Cup Trophy -- is all set to land in Kathmandu for the first time ever on Saturday. The trophy made of 18-carat gold, standing 36.5 cm tall and weighing 6.175 kg, will arrive in Kathmandu from Bhutan at 6 am Saturday and will be put on display at the Dasharath Stadium from 2 pm till 7:30 pm.  The trophy -- which is given VVIP status and which only former World Cup-winning captains and heads of state are allowed to touch -- is being brought to Nepal as part of the global FIFA World Cup Trophy tour, coinciding with celebrations of Coca-Cola’s 40 years in Nepal. Coca-Cola has been the official partner of the FIFA World Cup since 1950. Liverpool took over at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday, while Manchester City climbed to second place and Manchester United continued their recent revival. Man dies after being crushed by tractor

A man who was critically injured in a tractor accident died while undergoing treatment on Thursday. The victim is identified as Dipesh Khewang of Nagi VDC. Kewang was hit by the tractor, Ko 1 Ta 795, while he was taking out a wheel chock used to hold the  vehicle, said Police Inspector Rakesh Thapa. Khewang is both the driver and owner of the vehicle, said police. 

16 injured, 3 critically in Gulmi jeep mishap

As many as 16 people were injured in a jeep accident at Simichaur VDC in the district on Thursday morning. Police said a jeep, Lu 1 Ja 1413, bound for religious spot Supa Deurali based in Arghakhanchi, carrying pilgrims from Simichaur VDC, met with an accident at Rangbas today morning. Of the injured, the condition of the three victims is said to be critical. They are Nir Bahadur Thapa, 42, Dipank Pandeya, 18, and Santosh Pandeya, 19, of Simichaur VDC. According to Dr Hari KC, Superintendent at Gulmi District Hospital, critically injured Santosh has been referred to Palpa-based Lumbini Medical College after preliminary treatment at the district hospital. Likewise, the others injured in the mishap are Sagar Pandeya, 17, Kamala Pandey, 30, Maya Pandeya, 38, Hem Bahadur Pandey, 40, Dambar Bahadur Pandey, 39, Goma Paney, 35, Kansi Basnet, 35, among others. The victims are undergoing treatment at District Hospital, Tamghas. 

Two Indian looters arrested in Birgunj

Local residents have taken control of two Indian alleged robbers and sent them to the local police Wednesday morning in Birjung, on charges of robbing Rs 375 thousand from a local man. The duo was caught by the local residents at Adarshangar Main Road Chowk when they were fleeing to their destinations robbing the amount from Santosh Pathak of Pragatinagar. The two motorbike riders followed Pathak and robbed the amount while he was heading to Adarshanagar-based NIC Asia Bank branch to deposit the amount. Pathak retrieved his amount as the local police caught the duo with the help of local residents as they were fleeing to their destinations. The duo, from Siliguri of India, have been taken into police custody. 

Japan hands over vehicles and equipment to Nepal

The Japan government has provided grant assistance  to the Nepal government for strengthening the  forest preservation system in Nepal. Issuing a press statement, on Thursday, the Japanese embassy in Kathmandu said the Japan government of would provide 53 Nissan Pickup Vehicles, fire-fighting equipment, soil conservation, restoration and analysis equipments and GIS and remote sensing software required for status analysis and conservation management of forests, amounting to approximately Rs.451, 800,000. The embassy said that 53 Nissan pickup vehicles will be deployed at forests offices, national parks and soil conservation offices under the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation in some districts to be utilized for monitoring of forest and for assisting fire fighting. Driver among 2 held for killing injured passenger

Police have arrested two individuals on the charge of murder ing a person injured in an accident. Chief at District Police Office, Kavre, SP Arun Kumar BC, informed that driver of a Bolero jeep (Ba 9 Cha 2779), Ganesh Bahadur Mainali (32), alias Prakash of Methinkot-8, and conductor Ram Prasad Mainali, alias Ram Hari, of Sipali in Chilaune-8, have been arrested for their involvement in killing their passenger one Jit Bahadur Moktan, 38, of Budakhani-8, who was injured after falling off the jeep. "Police have been carrying out further investigation against the duo," said BC, "Preliminary investigations have shown the involvement of both driver and his assistant in the murder ." According to the statement recorded by conductor Mainali, Jit Bahadur Moktan, who was traveling in a white bolero jeep, was injured after he fell down onto the road at Kavre-3 stretch of BP Highway. Rs 26 m of Nabil Bank looted

A vehicle carrying Rs 26 million in cash of Nabil bank that was heading from Madhendranagar to Dhangdai has been robbed on Tuesday. The vehicle (Ma 1. Cha 146), carrying the cash was robbed by the group of masked men at Godawari Bridge in Kailali-Kanchanpur border area. The perpetrators incapacitated the four officials in the vehicle and ran away with the looted money.  The robbers also took mobile phones of three officials among four.  According to the officials, the robbers tied them and escaped.  Meanwhile, police have started interrogating the officials. Father rapes daughter in Siraha

 A 13-year-old  girl has been raped by her father in the district.  The shocking news came to the fore after the victim of Chandralalpur lodged a complaint at the police station on Friday.  The father is absconding since then.  A case has been filed against the perpetrator after medical check-up on Friday itself, said Siraha District Police Chief Pundra Chandra Joshi.  Police are conducting a manhunt to nab the culprit, he added.  Another minor girl had been raped in Ayoddhya area in the same district few days ago.   source- republica.com

Cricketers get warm reception

The Indian Embassy held a reception in Kathmandu on Thursday to celebrate Nepal’s progress into the 2014 ICC Twenty20 World Cup. Apart from the Nepal, two teams from India — Delhi Wanderers and Air India — and Singapore national team, who are competing in the Journey to World Cup cricket tournament — also attended the reception. Nepali cricket team’s recent success reminds former Indian batting star VVS Laxman of India during 1983. Govt to provide Rs 1 million each to cricket players

The government on Monday decided to provide Rs 1 million in cash  to the players of Nepali cricket team who returned home yesterday securing a place in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup  2014. A meeting of the Cabinet in the Capital today made the decision to effect so as to felicitate the players who registered the greatest achievement in Nepal's sporting history to date. As per the government decision, each of the players will get Rs 1 million, while the coach will receive Rs 5, 00,000. Likewise, the officials from the team management will receive Rs 3, 50,000 each. Nepal secured their berth at the ICC Twenty20 World to be held in Bangladesh next year for the first time in history after finishing third amongst 16 nations at the recently held Qualifiers in UAE. Death tolls rises to nine in Scotland helicopter crash

The number of people killed after a helicopter crashed into a pub in Scotland's biggest city Glasgow rose to nine, police said on Monday. Officers continue to sift through the wreckage at the site where a  police helicopter  crashed into the roof of a packed pub on Friday, trapping many inside in choking dust and debris. Deputy Chief Constable Rose Fitzpatrick  said in comments posted on the Police Scotland Facebook page that the toll had increased. Six killed, over 20 injured in Ramechhap bus accident

Six people have been killed and over 20 injured in a passenger bus accident in Ramechhap district on Monday morning. The bus (Ba 2 Kha 3166) heading for Ramechhap from Rampur met with an accident at Sukajor VDC-6, Paleban of the district this morning. The deceased have been identified as two women and four men. At least 4 dead as Metro-North passenger train derails in New York City

At least four people are dead after a Metro-North passenger train derailed on its way to New York City,  There are "dozens of injuries” in the accident that occurred at 7:20 a.m., about 100 feet north of the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, according to Metro-North. A Metro-North spokesman tells  the derailment involved the commuter train departing Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County at 5:54 a.m. -- the second train to leave that station on Sunday. The derailed train was due to arrive at Manhattan’s Grand Central Station at 7:43 a.m. The whole train comprised seven cars, plus a diesel locomotive, and five of the cars went off the tracks, said Metro-North spokesman Aaron Donovan. The derailment occurred near the Harlem River, and authorities say two cars were left lying on their sides, although none of the cars went into the nearby waterway. “One approached the water and came close, but did not go in,” Donovan tells.. A bus has veered off a mountain road in western Nepal Dadeldhura, killing 11 people and injuring 34.

According to government administrator Sagar Mani Parajuli, the bus went off the road and rolled for another 300 meters (990 feet). Residents and police pulled out the bodies and the injured from the wreckage near Melkharka village on Sunday. The road is narrow with hairpin bents and the visibility was poor because of morning fog. Bus accidents in Nepal are generally blamed on poorly maintained roads and public vehicles. source-dawn.com

Nepali Nat’l cricket team arriving today evening

Nepali national cricket team is flying back home today evening after a fantastic performance in the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers that concluded in UAE on Saturday. The team made history in tournament by qualifying for the ICC T20 World Cup for the first time. Nepal has finished third among the 16 nations defeating UAE by five wickets in the tournament on Saturday.
