Jazz is in the air as the ‘biggest jazz party in the Himalayas’, Jazz mandu, is soon to arrive in the Capital, and anticipation amongst music enthusiasts is at an all time high. The 11th edition of the festival will kick off with the Jazz for the Next Generation competition on October 24, to be held at the Kathmandu JazzConservatory (KJC) in Jhamsikhel at 4 pm. Selected finalists from the contest will perform for the crowd and a panel of judges, and the outfit deemed the ‘Outstanding Band’ therein will get to perform at the Jazz Bazaar on October 26, as well as the opportunity to take part in a private workshop with international jazz artists. And in the evening, at 7 pm, Cadenza and Friends will be jamming at Jazz Upstairs in Lazimpat.
Day two will comprise of Valley Jams, with gigs unfolding all over town. 4th Element will play at Manny’s Eatery and Bar in Ekantakuna, the Yatie Ramos Quartet at Moksh in Jhamsikhel, Claudia Quintet at Jazz Upstairs, Eliane Amherd at the House of Music in Thamel and Mike del Ferro at Bhumi in Lazimpat. Then on October 26, the Jazz Bazaar will take place at the Gokarna Forest Resort starting 2.30 pm, featuring a host of jazz, traditional Nepali folk and classical musical performances.
On day four, Red Hot Latin Jazz will be held at the Hotel Summit, Kupondole, at 6 pm, where Yaite Ramos Quartet and Eliane Amherd Trio will be playing. The Jazzmandu Masterclass will then be held on October 29 at the KJC, which will see music students and jazz enthusiasts interacting with visiting musicians. Also scheduled in the evening on the day is the Jazz at Patan event at the Dhokaima Cafe, another gig by Cadenza and Friends.
