Binod Bhandari scored a quick-fire half-century for Nepal to seal a thrilling two-wicket victory over Moors Sports Club on Friday in the second practice match of the national cricket team in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Nepal bowled out the Sri Lankan top-tier club for 147 runs in 36.2 overs and met the target in 32.2 overs losing eight wickets.
Chasing the small total, Nepal lost wickets at regular intervals. The opening partnership between Anil Mandal and Mahesh Chhetri ended at 11 runs when Mandal was dismissed for six runs. Chhetri also departed soon, adding only seven runs off 26 balls. Gyanendra Malla (8) and skipper Paras Khadka (28 off 32) fell in quick succession leaving Nepal languishing at 59/4.
However, Sharad Vesawkar (17 off 32) and Bhandari (52 off 29) rescued the team with a 67-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Bhandari struck seven fours and three sixes.
Basanta Regmi added just four runs while Pradeep Airee was out for a duck. Nepal was 135/8 after 27 overs, but Prithu Baskota (5 off 20) and Shakti Gauchan (10 off 20) stayed till the end to seal the victory.
Malinda Pushpakumara claimed four wickets for the Sri Lankan club while Kaushalya Gajasinghe and Shehan Jayasoriya dismissed two Nepali batsmen each.
Earlier, Nepal´s medium pacers Avinash Karn and Jitendra Mukhiya claimed the first four wickets of the Sri Lankan club and captain Khadka took one to restrict Moors to 78/5 in 16.1 overs.
Dilhara Lokuhettige, who has played nine ODI and two T20 matches for Sri Lanka, tried to anchor the Moors innings with a run-a-ball 55. But the tail-enders offered little resistance and the team was all out for 147 runs.
Shakti Gauchan and Anil Mandal claimed two scalps each and Basanta Regmi took one wicket to finish off the Moors tail.
Nepal will take on Sri Lanka Ports Authority Club on Tuesday in its third practice match. The Nepali team is in Sri Lanka to prepare for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers to be held in New Zealand from January 16 to February 1, 2014.
Nepal will fly to New Zealand directly from Sri Lanka. The Nepali team is scheduled to hold practice sessions and play some matches in New Zealand before the qualifiers begin.
