KATHMANDU: Dr Govinda KC, who has been on a fast-unto-death for the last 11 days demanding an end to political interference in the medical sector, today refused a request from Khil Raj Regmi, Chairman of the Council of Ministers, to end his strike.
Regmi today urged Dr KC to break his fast, saying that his office has already instructed the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University not to implement the appointment of Dr Shashi Sharma as the dean of the Institute of Medicine. But Dr KC said he would continue his hunger strike till all his demands were met. Earlier, Regmi, who is also the chancellor of TU, had issued directives to TU Vice Chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan as per the Clause 16 (3) of TU Act, 1992 to not implement the appointment. “The government is committed to addressing all your demands and the government has already given 24 hours to TU VC to make dean’s appointment decision null and void,” Regmi told Dr KC. Regmi was accompanied by Education Minister Madhav Poudel, also pro-chancellor of TU, and Health Minister Bidhyadhar Mallik. “Dr KC was also informed that the government was ready to hold talks with the striking doctors,” Minister Poudel said.
Dr KC told Regmi that he was not going to end his hunger strike in a hurry. Dr KC expressed his sincere thanks to the government for its concern about his demands and his health, which has deteriorated further.
TUTH docs resign en masse
KATHMANDU: Dr Bhagwan Koirala, Executive Director, TU Teaching Hospital, on Tuesday resigned from his post after 105 senior doctors, including assistant deans of the Institute of Medicine, quit en masse in support of Dr Govinda KC. More doctors will also in papers on Wednesday, Dr Rajendra Wagley said. Dr Koirala and other doctors have submitted their resignation letters to the Office of the Dean of IoM through the Office of the TU Vice Chancellor. In their resignation letters, they have said the move would help save Dr KC’s life and pave the way for the concerned authorities to implement the Supreme Court order which on Monday asked doctors and hospitals to resume services within an hour of receiving the court order. — HNS
