After an assurance that Prof Dr Prakash Sayami would be reinstated as the dean of Institute of Medicine following Dr Shashi Sharma's dismissal, senior orthopaedic surgeon Prof Dr Govinda KC is ending his fast-unto-death on Friday morning.
He is scheduled to formally end the hunger strike, which he started at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital premises on January 11, at 8:30 in the morning.
A high-level team comprising of secretaries at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs hald held a meeting with Prof KC till Thursday midnight to convince him.
They assured a frail Prof KC of meeting all demands, including stopping granting affiliation to new medical colleges and reinstating Prof Sayami as IoM dean, that he had put forth.
Though he cited personal health as the reason to quit, Prof Sayami had tendered resignation supposedly following pressure from various quarters to grant permission to four new medical colleges though they lacked proper infrastructure and resources.
This was the third time Prof KC staged hunger strike with demands related to reforms in the IoM.
