Shyam Thapa, a migrant worker in Kathmandu, had rushed to get a bus ticket for his village where he wanted to celebrate with his family the Dashain festival, which is observed for 15 days across Nepal.
Like Thapa, thousands of other Nepalese are also going home to celebrate the festival with their families and relatives. Due to the lack of opportunity in other parts of the country, a large number of Nepalese have flocked to the city to study and to seek employment.
But every year, when the migrants returned home for the Dashain festival, bus stops and airports in Kathmandu are packed with people waiting to go home. Markets and shops of Kathmandu are also crowded with shoppers buying new clothes, gifts, and luxuries. In the morning the temples are filled with devotees.
"During this festival, business is brisk since people traditionally wear new clothing," a shopkeeper told Xinhua.
Dashain commemorates a great victory of gods over demons. In preparations for Dashain, every home is cleaned and beautifully decorated and painted as an invitation to mother goddess, so that she may visit and bless the houses with good fortune. This festival provides an opportunity for family reunion and gatherings. Thousands of goats, sheep and chicken are killed as a tribute to the gods during the festivity.
