A candidate in the upcoming election for Nepal's constituent assembly died Thursday in a Kathmandu hospital, nearly a week after being shot in his home district in southern Nepal.
Mohammed Alam from the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) was shot Friday by a gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle in Bara district, about 250 kilometers south of Kathmandu, a day after his party nominated him as its candidate in the district.
Police said the case is under investigation.
The government has set Nov. 19 as the date for electing Nepal's second constituent assembly that will be tasked with finalizing the country's permanent constitution, left incomplete by the previous assembly.
The previous assembly, elected in 2008 as part of a peace process with Maoist former rebels, was dissolved in May last year after it was unable to deliver a permanent charter despite receiving several term extensions.
